According to "Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine," acne, a skin condition caused by the bacterium Propionobacterium acnes, commonly occurs in adolescents and manifests in comedomes, also called whiteheads, and blackheads. Comedomes result from hair follicles becoming blocked with oil, dead skin and bacteria, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Seafood

According to the website Acne Online, shrimp, oysters, lobster, crab, and seaweeds like nori, dulse, and kelp, all rich in iodine, can cause skin irritation or interfere with acne treatment. However, according to F. William Danby, M.D., in the "Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology," no evidence supports iodides as a cause of comedomal acne.

Trans Fats

Trans fats serve as a source of inflammation that causes acne. Chocolate-chip cookies made with cottonseed and/or soybean oil exacerbate acne due to the oil. Contrary to popular belief, chocolate does not cause acne. Glazed doughnuts, on the other hand, can contribute to acne because they contain a different kind of shortening to prevent the cake getting soft.

Omega-6 fatty acids

Foods high in omega-6 fatty acids, which can cause inflammation, can also cause acne. Examples include bacon, bologna, cheeseburgers and pie crust. Omega-3 fatty acids, on the other hand, are anti-inflammatory.

Sugar

Foods that the body rapidly converts to sugar cause acne. These include: bagels, french fries, pancakes and white rice, but not brown rice. According to an article by F. William Danby, M.D., in the journal "Clinical Dermatology," foods with significant sugar content affect serum insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 levels, both of which increase production of the male hormone, androgen and development of acne.
