There isn't strong agreement or scientific proof pointing to diet as the cause of acne. However, the onset of puberty, changes in hormone levels and a few select foods have been shown to affect changes in the skin and the amount of inflammation, irritation and frequency with which pimples appear.


The Merck Manual describes acne or acne vulgaris as "the formation of comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, and/or cysts as a result of obstruction and inflammation of hair follicles and their accompanying sebaceous gland." Merck states that acne commonly occurs in puberty "when surges in androgen stimulate sebum production and hyperproliferation of keratinocytes (excessive growth of the epidermis)." Hormonal changes during pregnancy or menstruation, certain cosmetics, clothing and sweating can also bring on acne.

Nutrient Concentrations

In the February 2003 "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," a study conducted on the nutrient intake of 203 men and women showed "significant associations in the total population between serum Vitamin A and skin sebum content and surface pH and between the dietary intake of total fat, saturated fat, monounsaturated fat and skin hydration."

Milk and Acne

In another study published in the February 2005 "Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology" on high school dietary dairy intake and teenage, diet and the possible link to acne was examined in more than 47,000 women who experienced severe acne as teenagers. A positive link was found with a variety of dairy products, such cream cheese and cottage cheese, but was especially strong with whole milk and skim milk. The presence of "hormones and bioactive molecules in milk" was attributed to the correlation between acne and milk.

Herbal Perspective

Herbalist Richard Mabey explains in his book "The New Age Herbalist" that the process of healing related to acne can be improved by avoiding fried food and animals fats and sugar, as well as alcohol, coffee and shellfish. He recommends a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables and the use of cold-pressed oils.
