How to Reduce the Appearance of Enlarged Pores on the Face
Large pores are caused by genetics, are more common in oily skin and are made worse by blackheads. Blackheads are an accumulation of dead skin cells and sebum that blocks pores, causing the opening to the pore to become larger. Infection in the pores can make the situation worse; pores also get larger with age. Nothing can permanently reduce the size of your pores, but there are tools that can reduce the appearance of large pores.
Cleanse your skin with a mild cleanser to remove dirt and oil from your face, especially the T-zone, or the forehead, nose and chin, where enlarged pores are common. Rinse thoroughly. Although large pores are genetic and common with oily skin, dead skin cells, oil and dirt can plug the pores making them worse.
Buy pore strips and use according to package directions, or make your own. Combine 1 tbsp. of gelatin with 1 tbsp. of milk in a very small pan. Warm over low heat, stirring until the gelatin dissolves. Test the temperature -- it should not be hot enough to burn your skin. If necessary, allow the mixture to cool for a few minutes. Paint it onto the areas with large pores and allow it to dry completely. Rinse your brush thoroughly. Peel off the dried gelatin carefully to avoid irritating your skin.
Purchase a mild acid mask, containing lactic acid, citric acid or salicylic acid to exfoliate dead skin cells. Use according to package directions. To make your own mild acid mask, combine 1 tbsp. yogurt, or mashed fruit such as strawberry or papaya with 1 tsp. of honey. Apply to your face smoothly and wait for 20 minutes before rinsing off. Milk products and fruit are sources of alpha hydroxy acids that exfoliate the skin, soften the sebum plugs and moisturize your skin. They reduce the size of sebum plugs and plump the skin cells so your pores look smaller.
Apply a skin tightening mask. You can either buy a commercial over-the-counter mask and follow pack directions, or use a beaten egg white. Whip the egg white to a froth to break it up, but not to the point of stiff peaks. Apply to your face and allow it to dry. Rinse the egg white off with cool water.
Apply a pore-minimizing cream after the skin tightening mask. Pore-minimizing creams work by plumping the skin cells so the pores look smaller. They contain alpha hydroxy acids, which are mildly irritating and cause the skin to swell, making pores look smaller.
