Rosacea is an autoimmune skin condition characterized by a red, acne-like rash and flushing, commonly on the face. Some people who have rosacea also develop redness around the eyes and thickening of the skin around the nose. Rosacea is a chronic disease; the condition itself cannot be prevented. The symptoms of rosacea flare and diminish from time to time; adjusting your diet may partially prevent flare-ups.

Determining Specific Triggers

Food in the general sense is a common trigger for a rosacea flare but the type of food that increases symptoms varies from person to person. Keeping a journal of everything you eat during the day and monitoring your physical response to particular foods can help you determine which specific foods trigger flushing and breakouts. Fruits, vegetables and dairy are among the food groups that tend to trigger symptoms, according to National Rosacea Society surveys, but different fruits, for example, may trigger a response in you than in another person. Once you have established a clear pattern of symptoms that crop up after eating a certain food, eliminate that item from your diet to see if your condition improves.

Tone Down Spices

Spicy foods and "hot" spices like cayenne, white pepper and red chili peppers affect up to 45 percent of people with rosacea, according to the National Rosacea Society, NRS. Even people who do not suffer from the autoimmune disease can experience flushing in the face while eating spicy foods like salsa, curry dishes and meats marinated or rubbed with potent spices. Vinegar-based flavorings, including soy sauce, may also have the same effect. Tone down these spices in your food or eliminate them from your diet completely, depending on the severity of your flushing and rash. Substitute other herbs that generate no heat.

Cool Off

Eating and drinking very hot foods and beverages can also trigger rosacea symptoms. To prevent a flare-up, cool your food to a moderate temperature and indulge in cold beverages, not hot. Opt for iced teas and coffees instead of piping hot versions, if the heat causes uncomfortable flushing. Heated beverages can account for increased symptoms in as many as 36 percent of rosacea sufferers, reports the NRS.

Alcohol in Moderation

Enjoy alcoholic drinks in moderation when you have rosacea. Red wine tops the list of alcoholic beverages that triggers a rosacea flare; beer is second in line. Spirits are less likely to cause facial redness when combined with water. Mixed drinks containing juice may also be tolerated more easily without contributing to redness and flushing.
