Overview

Skin is the body's largest organ, and it acts as a protective layer, shielding a person from light, heat, infections and injuries. It has an outer and inner layer, with little openings called pores that let sweat and oil move to the surface. Problems occur when the pores become blocked.

Process

Your skin constantly sheds dead cells as new ones take their places. Oil glands below the skin's outer layer make a lubricant called sebum to keep it from getting too dry. Pores can get clogged by the old cells and oil. The risk of a clog is highest in adolescence because hormones ramp up sebum production, according to the TeensHealth website.

Effects

Clogged skin pores cause pimples, or acne. The clogging creates a blackhead, TeensHealth explains, with a small opening at the top of the pore that looks dark. The clogging and closing of a pore causes a whitehead, which is characterized by a bulging, skin-colored bump. Acne can become inflamed and lead to more severe pimples like papules, pustules and cysts if bacteria mixes with the oil and dead skin cells. Nodules are formed when very deep pores become infected.

Treatment

Acne treatments clear clogged pores in different ways. Columbia University Health Services explains that salicylic acid, a common ingredient in acne remedies, reduces the number of skin cells so there are less to potentially cause blockages. Benzoyl peroxide, another popular option, dries up pore-clogging oil. It also kills bacteria to reduce the chance of inflammation in blocked pores.

Prevention

Columbia University Health Services recommends a steaming treatment to prevent clogged pores. Carefully remove a boiling pot of water from the stove, put a towel over your face and head, position them over the pot and let the skin be heated by the steam. Rinse it with cold water once the pot stops steaming. This can be done several times each week. Many cosmetics contribute to pore clogging, so use only noncomedogenic make-up or water-based products. Sweat causes problems when it combines with skin oil and dirt. People should shower immediately after physical exertion to rinse away substances that could clog the pores.

Considerations

Clogged skin pores cannot be completely prevented, especially during adolescence. TeensHealth explains that 80 percent of teenagers get clogged pores that develop into acne during puberty because of natural hormone fluctuations. Most eventually grow out of the problem, although pimples sometimes persist through adulthood.
