How to Get Rid of Blackheads or Clogged Pores How to Get Rid of Blackheads or Clogged Pores

Overview

Blackheads--or comedones--are a type of acne which form when open pores become clogged with oil, debris and dead skin cells. This is caused mainly by the overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous glands. Normally this oil will run up the hair follicle and out onto the skin but when too much sebum is produced, it clogs up the pore. This then reacts with oxygen and turns a blackish color. There is little evidence to confirm exactly what causes acne, although it is believed that hormonal changes play a role, explaining why many teenagers have acne.

Step 1

Sterilize the blackhead remover tool in a cup of rubbing alcohol. Dry thoroughly.

Step 2

Wash your face with a cleanser containing salicylic acid. This helps to remove dead skin cells and loosen clogged pores. It is contained in many over-the-counter acne products.

Step 3

Place the towel over your head. Lean over a bowl of hot water. Use the towel to cover around bowl, enclosing your face above the hot water. Steam your face for five to 10 minutes.

Step 4

Place the loop end of the sterilized remover tool over the blackhead. Push down gently, squeezing out the blackhead. Clean the tool with alcohol. Continue as needed for other clogged pores and blackheads.

Step 5

Rinse your face with warm water and a cleansing product with benzoyl peroxide. This will give a deep clean and kill any residual bacteria. Dab dry then gently moisturize.
