Clogged pores are a problem that affects teenagers and adults alike. Clogged pores develop when a hair follicle or a sebaceous gland becomes clogged with oil or dead skin cells. Identifying the symptoms of this condition can be important to helping prevent more serious conditions, such as acne and infections, from developing.

Pimples

Red bumps or pimples are one of the first signs you have clogged pores. The sebaceous glands will sometimes become clogged with dried oil and dead skin cells. This can cause small pimples to develop. If the pimple worsens or becomes infected, it can lead to more serious problems, such as acne, infected cysts and abscesses. To keep this from happening, it is important to wash your skin well and keep it as clean as possible.

Whiteheads

Whiteheads are also a distinct sign you have a problem with clogged pores. According to the University of Maryland, a complete blockage of the hair follicle will cause a whitehead to develop. A whitehead is a semi-solid white plug that develops in a pore. A whitehead can also worsen and develop into an infection. You might think that pinching your skin to remove the whitehead is the best thing to do, but this can cause skin damage and lead to scarring of the skin. Instead, try holding a hot washcloth against the skin until the blemish pops.

Blackheads

Blackheads are another sign you have a blocked pore. According to the University of Maryland, blackheads are an incomplete blockage of hair follicles. The black part of this type of pimple is not caused by dirt, but it is simply the exposure to the air. According to the University of Washington, blackheads can worsen and bacteria can form, causing more serious problems to develop deeper in the skin. This can lead to nodules or cysts to form, which are painful and more difficult to heal.
