Clogged Pores on the Chin
Clogged pores on the skin lead to blackheads that become infected, creating red spots of acne. Facial acne, particularly on the chin, is difficult to mask, but is easily prevented with a regular cleaning routine and early treatment of isolated clogged pores. Clogged pores are created by excess oil, dry skin cells and infections related to these two conditions.
Pores secrete oil and perspiration so that the skin on the chin remains cool and supple. One inch of skin is estimated to contain more than one million pores. The pores on the chin pose special problems for males due to daily shaving. Razors push hair follicles into the pores and increase the amount of oil and dead skin cells left in the open pores. This creates blackheads or enlarges the area, creating a bump.
The acne "T-zone" includes the chin, nose and forehead, and for most teens and young adults this area produces a significant amount of oil. The surface is also routinely exposed to bacteria from telephones and human hands over the course of an ordinary day, creating many chances for infection of clogged pores. Dermatologist Joshua Fox from the The Advanced Dermatology: Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery states that clogged pores are a common adult problem.
Cleaning is important to reducing the amount of clogged pores on the skin, but excess scrubbing and washing, according to the Mayo Clinic, irritates the skin and may create additional outbreaks. The most important element in treatment is to avoid applying greasy makeup or exposing the chin to grease from work or the environment. Treating clogged chin pores with over-the-counter products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid dries out the clogs and opens the pores.
Prevention of clogged chin pores involves a regular maintenance routine that includes removing any type of makeup at night, and also allowing the pores to be free from blockages by avoiding wearing makeup whenever possible. Avoid resting the chin on hands while sitting or covering the chin with cloth or plastic. These actions prevent air from circulating around the chin and add moisture and bacteria to the chin pores. Early application of drying products to areas of clogged pores can help in drying the clogs before they becomes inflamed by bacteria infection.
The impact of acne "...on the quality of life has been recognized for over 30 years" noted a 2009 article in the "Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology," written by a group of doctors from the Indian Acne Alliance. The group cites the psychological burden and the emotional and social impairment related to acne outbreaks. The sufferer wants immediate relief, but treatment of infected clogged chin pores may take up to six months before noticeable improvement. The most effective action is to remove any potential causes of clogged pores, even if this means altering fashion or cosmetic use to avoid the chin.
