How to Treat Black Heads
Blackheads are a result of overproduction of sebum, the skin's natural oil, by the sebaceous glands. This oil combines with dead skin cells and oxidizes, which gives blackheads their characteristic dark appearance. Treating blackheads requires sloughing off dead skin so that the pores can remain open and oil can flow freely through them. Environmental pollutants can collect on the skin and make blackheads worse, so proper cleansing and exfoliating are essential for keeping your face clear.
Wash your face with an exfoliating green tea facial scrub. Green tea is a mild astringent and full of antioxidants. If you prefer to make your own, mix 1 tbsp. room-temperature green tea, 3 tbsp. sugar, and 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice. Massage the mixture onto your face in a circular motion with your fingertips and rinse with warm water.
Boil a pot of water and set the pot on a folded towel on your bathroom counter. Put a bath towel over your head to make a tent, and steam your face for 15 minutes. The steam helps to open your pores and soften blackheads for easier removal.
Apply a bentonite clay facial mask. Bentonite clay is made from volcanic ash, and acts like a sponge to draw out blackheads and impurities. Allow the mask to dry on your face, then wash well with warm water.
Splash your clean face with cool water to close the pores.
Apply a salicylic acid toner, gel or cream to areas where blackheads are concentrated, to help prevent new ones from forming.
