How to Treat Tough Back Acne
Your back is prone to breakouts because of the large number of oil glands it has, explains David Sire, a California dermatologist, in "Marie Claire" magazine. Your back is also prone to pore-clogging perspiration, especially when it's hot outside or when you're bundled up to protect against cold weather, explains Sire. Whatever the weather, back acne--better known in beauty circles as "bacne"--is rarely a welcome guest, which is why it scored a spot on "Allure" magazine's list of most embarrassing skin issues.
Use a cleanser with salicylic acid every time you shower. Salicylic acid helps exfoliate your back to clean up clogged pores, and its mild antibacterial power will help soothe acne inflammation and irritation.
Keep your shower from getting too hot, which can cause skin irritation, according to Sire.
Opt for loose clothing made with natural fibers--tight-fitting tops and polyester fabrics can make your back sweaty.
Use benzoyl peroxide cream at night to spot treat active breakouts. Enlist help if it's tough to reach affected areas by yourself. Keep in mind that benzoyl peroxide can stain sheets and clothing, so plan your sleep wear accordingly.
Ask your dermatologist about laser treatments if your acne is still raging after three weeks of using salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. According to Jeannette Graf, dermatologist, in "Allure" magazine, a series of treatments with Isolaz lasers can completely clear up "bacne."
