Acne is an unsightly and sometimes painful condition caused by overactive sebaceous glands, states the University of Maryland Medical Center. The sebaceous glands produce an excess of oil that combines with dead skin cells, causing the pores to become clogged and inflamed. Although teenagers are most often affected, acne can impact people of any age. A soothing facial mask that you can make from wholesome ingredients in your kitchen can ease the redness and irritation associated with acne.

Step 1

Make a cup of chamomile tea. Place 1 cup of water in a small saucepan. Bring the water to a boil and add 2 tsp. dried chamomile blossoms. Alternatively, brew a cup of chamomile tea using a teabag.

Step 2

Put a lid on the saucepan and allow the chamomile tea to brew for 1 minute. Remove the saucepan from the burner and allow the tea to cool to room temperature. Use the mask once every week.

Step 3

Place 1/4 cup of rolled oats or old fashioned oatmeal into a blender or coffee grinder. Process the oats until a coarse powder is formed.

Step 4

Measure 1/4 cup of the chamomile tea into a bowl, and then stir in the oatmeal. Add 2 drops of olive oil or sweet almond oil, 2 tbsp. natural honey, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon and 1/2 tsp. nutmeg. Stir until blended. If your skin is sensitive or inflamed, omit the cinnamon and nutmeg.

Step 5

Wash your face with a warm washcloth. Massage the mask gently onto your skin. Allow the mask to remain on your face for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel.
