Natural Acne Washes
There are many ways to treat acne breakouts, such as applying benzoyl peroxide creams or washing your skin with an acne-fighting wash. In order to avoid irritation or inflammation that could result from using chemical acne treatments, it is possible to use natural acne washes that will clear your skin without causing damage.
It is important to create a natural acne wash with ingredients that are known to fight acne. A study conducted through the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, suggests that tea tree oil is just as effective as benzoyl peroxide, but without the unwanted side effects, such as peeling, burning, itching or redness. Chamomile essential oil, which acts as an anti-inflammatory on your skin, will also help reduce the severity of acne breakouts. Other helpful ingredients that can be used in a natural acne wash include lemon juice, which increases skin cell turnover to keep your pores clear, and aloe vera, which reduces inflammation.
Methods of Use
Natural acne washes can be used in place of a cleanser, or as a toner after washing your skin with a gentle soap. To use an acne wash as a cleanser, wet your skin thoroughly, and pour 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil into your hands. Jojoba oil is a non-comedogenic oil that can be combined with your acne wash to create a deeply cleansing acne treatment. Drop three drops of tea tree oil and two drops of chamomile essential oil into the jojoba oil, mixing them together well. Massage the oils onto your skin for three minutes, then place a steaming hot washcloth over your face to cause your pores to open and drain. After the washcloth cools, use it to wipe off the oils. To use an acne wash as a toner, fill an empty spray bottle with 4 ounces of concentrated lemon juice, and add in 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel and three drops of tea tree oil. Mix the substances well, and spray the mixture onto your skin after it has been cleansed. Allow the acne wash to dry onto your skin.
If you experience any redness or irritation from using tea tree oil, lemon juice, aloe vera, jojoba oil or chamomile essential oil on your skin, discontinue their use. Talk to your doctor or dermatologist to determine if you may have an allergy to one of these substances.
Check with your doctor if you are pregnant or have an autoimmune condition or illness that may interact poorly with tea tree oil or chamomile essential oil.
Using a natural acne wash may take a little bit longer to clear your acne than using a stronger chemical cream like benzoyl peroxide cream. However, once your skin clears using a natural treatment method, it will be soft, supple and free of irritation.
