Small Red Bumps on the Scalp
Red bumps on your scalp may not be a huge concern if you have a full head of hair. But if you suffer from partial balding of the hair, red bumps can be easily seen by others in addition to being painful. Red bumps on the scalp are often a temporary development, but they can make it painful to comb or even touch your hair. Knowing the cause of these bumps can help you approach treatment.
Red bumps can come in a number of styles. Some may be isolated, small bumps that may appear individually or in small numbers. Larger red bumps, on the other hand, may be connected to a larger issue and can be cystic in nature. But you may also suffer from widespread red bumps appearing on the scalp, and these can be isolated to the top of your head or present on other regions of the body.
If you shave your scalp, you may sometimes develop red bumps that are very swollen and sensitive to touch. These may be ingrown hairs that penetrate back into the skin, creating a red bump. When you cut your hair with a razor, the hair is often cut at an angle that makes for a sharp end. When your hair is curly, you stand a greater risk of having these hair curl back and stab through the skin. Fortunately, pulling the hair gently from the skin eliminates the irritation and will allow the red bump to recede.
Acne can develop on any part of the skin, but if you are using products in the hair or on your scalp that introduce oils and grease onto the skin, you could stand a greater risk of developing acne exclusively on the scalp. This can range from minor pustules appearing on the scalp and developing white pus heads, but you can also experience larger, cystic acne or nodules, and these can be very painful and visible. Proper scalp hygiene and limiting your use of hair products can help reduce or eliminate acne.
Bug bites can come in several forms. One of the most common causes is lice and parasites that infest the scalp and hair. These irritations can be itchy and sometimes painful, and it can take special medications and treatments to effectively rid your scalp of these bugs. Other bites like those from mosquitoes are also a possibility, but it is likely you will also develop these bites on other parts of your body as well.
Allergies can sometimes cause hives to break out on the scalp. This can be isolated to the scalp alone if you use a product containing ingredients that your skin has an allergy toward. Other irritations, such as heat rash, can develop on the scalp, particularly if it is hidden under a hat on a hot day. If you are unable to identify the cause of the acne, call or visit a doctor or dermatologist.
