Acne Skin Care During Pregnancy
Taking care of your skin should always be a priority, but during pregnancy, it can be of particular concern since your skin can breakout more when you're expecting. Though it might be your instinct to run to the drug store and buy a cleanser to banish your blemishes, you have to keep the well-being of your baby in mind and take precautions as well when considering new acne treatments.
Acne during pregnancy can be caused by the drastic hormone fluctuations occurring as your body changes to accommodate your baby. A surge in estrogen can cause your skin to produce more oil. Often referred to as the pregnancy glow, for many women, this results in a surge of acne breakouts.
OTC Topical Treatments
For the most part, over-the-counter topical treatments are safe for expectant mothers to use in the treatment of their acne. Benzoyl peroxide, one of the most common ingredients in acne treatments, is generally safe for pregnant women. However, you should still consult with your doctor to ensure use of this medication is appropriate in your specific case.
Isotretinoin is a drug that often goes by the brand name Accutane and is effective in treating acne. It's an oral medication that is prescribed for very serious cases of acne. However, it's riddled with potential side effects, especially for pregnant women, so it's vital that you don't take this drug while you're pregnant or breast feeding. Side effects include birth defects, depression and suicidal thoughts.
Topical retinoids are a popular choice for treating acne, but should be avoided during pregnancy. Tretinoin and tazarotene are commonly prescribed drugs, and though there isn't hard evidence they can harm a fetus, they aren't recommended for use while pregnant.
Sometimes, antibiotics are used to kill off bacteria and help clear up your case of acne. Topical or oral antibiotics are prescribed. While some are fine for use during pregnancy, it's important to steer clear of oral tetracycline, including minocycline and doxycycline. These drugs can stain your fetus's teeth permanently.
