Overview

With the National Library of Medicine reporting that approximately 45 million Americans suffer from acne, you aren't alone if you develop pimples and the resulting red marks that appear after the blemishes have gone. Although the red marks will slowly fade on their own over time, you can help accelerate the healing process to quickly restore your face's natural brightness and tone.

Step 1

Wash your face in the morning as soon as you get up. Splash your face with lukewarm water and rub on a water-soluble skin cleanser formulated for acne-prone skin. This helps get rid of oil to improve the efficacy of the skincare products you'll soon be applying.

Step 2

Rinse your skin, then dab it. Avoid rubbing it, as that can make redness worse by irritating your skin. Instead, dry with a towel.

Step 3

Smooth on a skin cream or serum formulated with alpha hydroxy acid with an acid concentration of 8 percent, according to skincare tester Paula Begoun, author of "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me." This acid helps exfoliate your skin by loosening the surface skin cells and sloughing off the damaged cells that make up your acne marks to accelerate your skin's return to its natural appearance.

Step 4

Wash your face again in the evening before you go to bed by repeating Steps 1 and 2.

Step 5

Dab on a salicylic acid cream or serum. Salicylic acid has several benefits for acne-prone skin. First, it helps exfoliate your skin to help fade marks. Second, it has anti-inflammatory properties to help visibly reduce redness, according to the American Chemical Society. Finally, it helps clear your pores to prevent future pimples from developing, according to MayoClinic.com.
