How to Reduce Facial Redness & Acne
Two causes of facial redness are acne and rosacea. Rosacea is a disease that affects your blood vessels, causing them to inflame and become infected. You get acne when your skin produces too much oil that gets trapped in your skin and causes a reaction that forms a pimple. Facial redness can also occur when you have bacteria, skin mites or poor blood circulation. You can reduce facial redness and acne by taking care of your skin, taking the right medication and using vitamins.
Do not touch your face. Your facial redness and acne can become much worse if you frequently touch your hands to your face, which can transfer bacteria and dirt to your skin. Even if your face itches, do not scratch or touch it.
See your doctor for a skin cream for your facial redness. Skin creams can reduce the red color of your face and heal any pimples and acne. The MayoClinic.com says face creams such as Avita, Retin-A and Renova can increase cell turnover and stop your hair follicles from plugging up. The Boston University School of Medicine recommends metronidazole for rosacea, calling it the "gold standard" treatment.
Avoid the sunlight. UV rays make your facial redness, rosacea and acne flare up and look much worse. If you must be in the sun, wear protective clothing like a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 that contains natural ingredients like zinc or titanium dioxide, as opposed to sunscreens filled with chemicals like benzophenone and cinnamates that can irritate your skin and make it more red.
See your dermatologist for antibiotics for your facial redness and acne. The MayoClinic.com says antibiotics will kill the bacteria and reduce the inflammation of your facial redness. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics that contain benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin, like Benzaclin, Duac, Acanya. Be aware that antibiotics can cause side effects like dizziness, a sick stomach and skin discoloration. The MayoClinic.com says in most people, you will use topical and oral antibiotics at the same time. It says that studies show the using topical benzoyl combined with oral antibiotics could decrease your risk of developing antibiotic resistance.
Undergo intense pulsed light treatment, or IPL. IPL is a procedure where you doctor points a laser beam onto affected areas of skin, using several different wavelengths to target bacteria that causes inflammation. IPL can improve your skin's texture and reduce scarring. The MayoClinic.com says that IPL is generally a stand-alone therapy for people who can't stomach or take any other kinds of medication.
