Overview

It's an accomplishment to be celebrated when you get rid of your acne, but your happiness might be squashed by the pesky red spots acne can leave behind. Called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, these red spots are merely signs of former skin inflammation and damage and should fade on their own after a year or so. However, there are ways to eliminate your acne red spots and get your skin clear once and for all at a much faster rate.

Step 1

Wear sunblock. Use sunblock on a daily basis, no excuses. Regardless of your skin tone, it's important to wear sunscreen because sun exposure can darken red spots left behind by acne. Apply sunscreen after you moisturize and before you put on makeup to protect your skin from further damage.

Step 2

Use a skin bleaching cream. If you have dark skin pigment, this isn't recommended, since it will make your entire face lighter. However, if you're fair, you can use a hydroquinone cream to bleach away red spots from acne.

Step 3

Apply a dab of lemon juice. This will speed up fading of the red spots. Lemon juice is highly acidic and can strip the pigment from your skin after continuous use. Apply twice a day, then rinse after 15 minutes to prevent skin irritation.

Step 4

Consult a dermatologist about cosmetic procedures to lighten or remove your red spots. Microdermabrasion is a mild treatment that can be done to remove the top layer of skin more quickly and to fade your spots over time. Chemical peels work in much the same way but instead use an acid to encourage the sloughing off of the top layer of skin. Dermabrasion is more serious and will leave your skin an open wound, requiring several weeks of healing time. Once healed, however, your skin will possess a more even tone. Go over the side effects and costs of each procedure before agreeing to any treatment.
