Acne is the result of the natural oils of the skin, called sebum, mixing with dead skin cells, dirt and bacteria, which causes blockages in the skin's pores. The development of acne can be influenced by a number of factors including genetics, hygiene and skin irregularities. Regardless of the reasons for acne development, there are a few different ways you may be able to prevent its occurrence.
Practice good hygiene. Every time you wash your body and face, you remove the dirt, bacteria, sweat and oils from your skin's surface that contribute to acne. You can further increase your protection from acne by washing with products specifically designed for the prevention of acne. Ideally, you should your face twice a day, but no more, as too much washing can lead to skin irritation. When you exfoliate, you facilitate the removal of dead skin cells from the body. As you rinse the exfoliant away, you also wash away the residual skin cells that can contribute to pore blockages.
Wear less restrictive clothing. Not only can tight clothing trap heat and cause you to sweat, it can also rub and irritate the skin. This mixture of constant friction and sweating can result in acne breakouts. This principle also applies things such as backpack straps and hats.
Change your makeup routine. The heavy application of makeup, especially foundation, can quickly clog pores, resulting in an increased risk of acne breakouts. If not wearing makeup is not an option, invest in organic natural makeups free of ingredients such as sodium chloride. Removing your makeup before you go to bed can also decrease your chances of acne issues.
Watch your diet. Including the right types of vitamins in your daily diet can both help keep your skin healthy enough to resist acne breakouts, as well as boost the immune system to help fight off the bacteria that causes acne. According to the National Institute of Health, vitamins that help with skin health include vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin E and vitamin K.
