There are several common misconceptions about ways you can prevent acne. Avoiding chocolate, soda and other sweets will not prevent breakouts. You can take some simple home measures to prevent acne breakouts. If home remedies are not effective, you may need to use prescription acne medications continuously to stop pimples.

Cleanse Regularly

Washing the skin twice a day is recommended by both the Mayo Clinic and the TeensHealth websites. You should not wash excessively, because this can irritate the skin. Daily washing with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water gets rid of any excess oil and dead skin cells that could potentially clog the pores and lead to breakouts. Wash after sweating, because the extra moisture on the skin can also clog the pores.

Check Product Labels

The type of products you are using could be causing your breakouts. To control the amount of oil on your skin, only use makeup and skin care products that are labeled oil free. Another label to look for is non-comedogenic. If you find this description, the product has gone through testing and been found to not clog the pores. When styling hair, keep gels and sprays off the face, because these often contain oils that can irritate the skin. Choose powder products rather than, creams, because they're lighter and less likely to cause oiliness.

Change Clothing

If you are prone to body acne, adjust your wardrobe. Tight-fitting and restrictive clothing can irritate the skin. Instead, choose lightweight and breathable fabrics, like cotton. Avoid backpacks, hats and helmets, which can encourage breakouts.

Topical Creams

If you have oily skin, you may need an over-the-counter, acne-fighting cream to dry up excess oils. Choose versions that contain either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide as the active ingredient. Apply the cream once or twice a day, after washing your skin.
