How to Prevent Acne Outbreaks
Acne is a skin condition characterized by inflamed pustules. It occurs when the sebaceous glands in the skin produce too much oil, which blocks the pores. Acne is especially common during adolescence when the sebaceous glands are at their most active. The chances of an acne outbreak can be reduced by following some specific skin maintenance procedures.
Clean your skin carefully. Use a gentle soap to wash your skin once in the morning and once at night. You should also wash your skin after heavy exercise. Rinse thoroughly afterward to ensure the soap doesn't remain on the skin. You may also need to shampoo your hair every day if you have oily hair.
Avoid touching skin lesions as much as possible. You increase the risk of developing scars when you pick at pimples or other blemishes caused by acne. Avoid astringents unless your skin is very oily, and even then you should use them only on the oily areas.
Shave your beard only when necessary. Soften your beard with warm water and apply a shaving cream for sensitive skin. Use a fresh safety razor and a light touch so that you don't nick blemishes more than necessary. Shave in the direction of hair growth, and avoid making multiple passes more than necessary.
Use acne medication. A topical cream or lotion may be applied directly to the skin to prevent an acne outbreak. Acne medication contains active ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or tretinoin, which can reduce the amount of oil in the skin.
Stay out of the sun as much as possible. Sunburn can make blemishes more difficult to see by darkening the skin, but this is only temporary. Acne medication can make you more prone to sunburn. Excessive exposure to the sun also ages the skin and increases the risk of skin cancer.
