Overview

When pimples keep popping up on your face, it may seem as if there is nothing you can do to stop the cycle. The American Academy of Dermatology explains that excess oil, clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation are all key factors in the development of acne outbreaks. Following a few basic skin care tips to remove oil, bacteria and dead cells from your face and skin can help prevent inflammation that results in the formation of pimples, blackheads and whiteheads.

Step 1

Use warm water and a gentle soap or cleanser to wash the face and skin once or twice daily. Washing removes extra oil, bacteria and dead cells that can clog pores. Washing your face and skin too often can actually irritate the skin, according to MayoClinic.com.

Step 2

Buy water-based, oil-free skin care products, sunscreen and make up. Products that contain oils will only add to the natural oils already on your face. If acne is severe, try to avoid wearing make up or other skin care products, if possible.

Step 3

Remove make up and skin care products from your face before going to bed. Leaving products on your skin can irritate the skin and clog pores, causing new pimples.

Step 4

Apply over-the-counter acne medications that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to your skin. These medications help dry excess oil, according to Mayo Clinic.com.

Step 5

Shampoo your hair daily, particularly if you have oily hair. When hair is clean, there is less chance that hair oil will come into contact with the face and clog pores.

Step 6

Shield your face with your hand when applying hair care products. Hair spray, hair gels and other hair products can also clog pores if they accidentally get on the face.

Step 7

Wash your skin and face after you have been exercising to remove sweat and body oils.
