Overview

It's not just teens who fight acne; acne affects many adults as well. Environmental factors, hormonal changes and stress can all cause acne in adults. But over-the-counter treatments can be harsh and carry many side effects, so many adults seek a natural remedy for their acne. A wide array of plants and flowers have medicinal qualities that can treat the symptoms and causes of adult acne.

Step 1

Cleanse skin thoroughly. Use an all-natural skin cleanser, such as tea tree oil. You can find all-natural cleansers with tea tree oil at many health food stores. Or use essential oil of the tea tree, which has antiseptic and antibacterial qualities. It goes deep into pores to remove impurities and can prevent acne from appearing. Pour a little bit onto a cotton ball or pad and gently cleanse the face.

Step 2

Take a zinc supplement. According to the Mayo Clinic, research suggests that zinc, a mineral that encourages wound healing and reduces inflammation, may help to treat acne from the inside out. Zinc can also be added to natural creams or lotions and applied topically to prevent acne breakouts.

Step 3

Apply glycolic acid to the skin. Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid found in sugar cane. You can make an all-natural glycolic acid scrub at home using pure cane sugar, preferably organic. Mix 1/2 cup of sugar with either enough olive oil or honey to make a paste. Apply it to the skin and rub gently in a circular motion for a few minutes. Do not scrub, as this can be irritating to the skin. Rinse with cool water. Apply the scrub once a week.

Step 4

Drink chamomile tea and apply it directly to your acne. Chamomile tea reduces toxicity in the skin and has anti-inflammatory properties. Use the chamomile flowers available at health food stores to brew two cups of tea. Drink one of the cups of tea and let the other cup cool and then apply it to the affected areas with a cotton ball or cloth. Do this daily for a few weeks to see results.
