How to Heal an Acne Cyst How to Heal an Acne Cyst

Cystic acne is one of the most severe forms of acne. Described as "sac-like lesions" by the American Academy of Dermatology, these painful bumps develop in the deeper layers of the skin and are repositories of white blood cells, dead cells and bacterial pus. Acne cysts can rupture and result in severe scarring. Therefore, they must be treated very gently as they heal.

Healing Cystic Acne

Step 1

Resist the urge to squeeze or pick at an acne cyst. The AAD indicates that manually squeezing any type of inflammatory acne lesions can result in forcing the infection deeper into the skin, resulting in deeper inflammation. Cystic acne, which has the propensity to scar, should be left alone.

Step 2

Schedule a consultation with a dermatologist, a doctor who specializes in skin disorders such as cystic acne. The AAD notes that severe forms of acne, such as nodules and cysts, are unlikely to resolve without a specialized treatment plan--over-the-counter topical treatments probably won't heal an acne cyst. As cystic acne is painful, disfiguring and causes severe scarring, it's important to get a dermatologist's help rather than simply letting it run its course.

Step 3

Ask your dermatologists about your options. The AAD notes that there are treatments that can heal an acne cyst, such as interlesional corticosteroid injections and surgical drainage and excision, procedures performed in the doctor's office in a sterile environment. However, you may wish to inquire about more comprehensive, long-term methods to resolve cystic acne. These may include use of oral medications, such as isotrentinoin or antibiotics. For women, birth control medications may help resolve cystic acne.
