How to Prevent Acne & Breakouts
Acne occurs when the pores of your skin get clogged with dead skin cells, dirt, and an oil your skin produces called sebum. This gives Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) the environment it needs to cause infection. Problems with acne, especially on the face, can be both painful and embarrassing. Luckily, with a few changes to your regular hygiene routine, you can help treat current outbreaks, and prevent future ones.
Wash your face twice a day. Whenever you wash your skin you remove a number of things that can contribute to acne breakouts. This includes dirt, oil, dead skin cells, and even the bacteria that causes acne. Washing once in the morning and once at night is enough to help prevent breakouts. Any more than this can cause skin irritation. According to the American Skin Association, you should be sure and choose an oil-free water based washing solution.
Wear loose clothing. According to the Mayo Clinic Tight clothing traps heat and can cause irritation to the skin. Tighter clothing also traps excess moisture which can give acne cause bacteria the environment it needs to thrive.
Consider wearing less makeup. Many makeups contain comedogenic (acne causing) ingredients such as isopropyl isostearat and sodium chloride. These ingredients block the pores of your skin, contributing to acne breakouts. If you choose to wear makeup, look for all-natural products, and always remove your makeup before going to bed. Replacing older makeup, and cleaning out your makeup brushes on a regular basis can also help reduce the number of acne breakouts.
Shower directly after any activity that causes you to sweat. When you sweat, it mixes with the natural oils on your skin which can contribute to acne development. By showering after physical activities (or any other activity that causes you to sweat) you remove excess oil, dirt and dead skin cells, reducing your chances of clogging pores.
Avoid touching your face. Your hands can be one of the dirtiest areas on your body. They also tend to accumulate the most sweat, bacteria, and body oils. As you touch your face, you transfer these substances from the hands onto the pores of your face. This can contribute to facial breakouts of acne.
