If you suffer from acne, you have probably already spent money on at least one over-the-counter (OTC) product for your skin. Many people with acne try multiple OTC products before they find something that works for them. If that sounds like you, take a look at some of these home acne remedies before spending any more money on OTC acne products.

Oily skin often comes as part of the territory for people who have acne. In fact, it is a contributing cause to acne breakouts. Excess oil mixes with debris such as dead skin cells, which clog the pores and leads to pimples. Oatmeal is a great remedy for oily skin because it's dry and very absorbent, so it soaks up excess oil. To use this remedy, simply prepare the oatmeal as though you were going to eat it by adding warm water and mixing it into a thick paste. Apply this paste to your skin and allow it to dry, rinsing after about 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat this once or twice daily.

Lemon Juice

The citric acid in lemon juice makes it another effective home remedy. Lemon juice unclogs pores as well as promotes even sloughing of skin cells and encourages new skin cell growth. Use this remedy as you would a toner or astringent. Soak up some lemon juice with a cotton ball and rub this over your face after each washing. For some, straight lemon juice may be too strong and cause skin irritation. If you notice that lemon juice is too strong for your skin, simply dilute it with a bit of water until it is tolerable.

While honey may not seem like something you want to spread over your face, it is actually a powerful antimicrobial. It reduces the P. acnes bacteria that contributes to acne breakouts. The texture of honey also sticks to the debris that clogs pores and pulls it away. As an added bonus, the antioxidants in honey help preserve the youth and vitality of your skin. Try to find honey that hasn't undergone a lot of processing, such as organic honey. A great place to look is at your local health or natural foods store. To use this remedy, spread a layer of honey over your skin with clean hands and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Honey tends to melt and drip when exposed to body heat, so drape a towel around your shoulders to catch any drippings.
