Overview

When acne happens, it can often feel as if your skin is under attack. According to some yoga theories, there may be some truth to that. Yoga is all about balance, and balancing your body's systems through a detoxifying yoga practice may help acne and other skin woes. Note that conventional treatments and preventative measures are most effective in fighting acne.

Connections

Yoga has connections to ayurveda, a system that combines physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of healing. Ayurvedic practitioners believe that your body is governed by three energies, or doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. Pitta, or the "fire" force, is believed to cause acne when it is knocked out of balance. Practicing yoga can help you restore balance to the doshas, relieving a number of conditions, according to ayurvedic theory. However, yoga doesn't replace conventional acne treatment.

Other Causes

The most common causes of acne are clogged pores and bacteria. Pores can become blocked by excess oil or dirt on the skin. Your body naturally produces both sebum, the oil that keeps your skin moist, and P. acnes, the bacteria that flourish in excess sebum. When the two combine, inflammation results; the more severe the inflammation, the larger or deeper the blemish.

Solution

Most individual blemishes will go away on their own, especially if you're already practicing a healthy skin-care routine. To speed up the process, dab a small amount of an acne treatment cream on the blemish and let dry. Commercial acne-fighting ingredients include salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide; for a natural alternative, try a cream containing tea tree oil or turmeric. Never pick at or "pop" pimples -- it can cause scarring and infection.

Prevention

To prevent acne, wash your face, and body if applicable, with a mild cleanser containing salicylic acid or tea tree oil daily and after doing yoga or other exercise. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy foods; although certain foods have not been shown to trigger acne, getting essential nutrients can improve your skin's overall condition.
