Overview

If you’re one of the 40 to 50 million Americans with acne, you know how hard it can be to control. This skin condition that usually pops up during the teenage years results from plugged follicles, excessive oil secretion and a bacteria that lives on skin called Propionibacterium acnes or P. acnes, according to the American Academy of Dermatology or AAD. Fortunately, there are several ways you can destroy this acne-causing bacteria without harming your skin.

Step 1

Wash your face twice daily with a mild antibacterial soap or liquid cleanser to avoid excessive dryness and irritation. Use lukewarm water and gently pat dry.

Step 2

Avoid using an astringent or scrub as these two products may irritate your skin more. Ask your doctor for a suitable astringent if you have oily skin.

Step 3

Apply a topical acne medication to destroy bacteria and remove dead skin cells. Some of these topical creams, gels, or lotions contain azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid and may require a prescription. Use as directed to avoid increased sensitivity.

Step 4

Apply a sunscreen specifically formulated for the face as many oral and topical acne medications increase photosensitivity.

Step 5

Avoid wearing makeup, especially oil-based makeup that will clog your pores. Choose non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic cosmetics if you must wear makeup. Wash your face to remove all makeup before you go to bed.

Step 6

Avoid touching your face throughout the day because this increases the amount of bacteria on your skin.

Step 7

Consult your doctor to get advice on oral medications such as antibiotics, or isotretinoin for severe acne.
