Acne Antibiotic Treatment
Acne antibiotics - How effective are they?
Acne antibiotics work in two different ways. The former one is to reduce the number of bacteria on the skin and the later one is to reduce inflammation. Both topical and oral acne antibiotics are frequently prescribed by doctors for moderate to severe cases of acne.
Following is a list of the most widely used acne antibiotics:
Topical acne antibiotics:
- Clindamycin - Clinac solution, Dalacin T gel, lotion, solution & Topicil solution
- Erythromycin- Stiemycin solution, Eryacne gel Oral acne antibiotics
- Tetracycline - tetracycline minocycline & doxycycline
- Erythromycin - Emu-V, Eryc, Eromycin, E-mycin, EES & ERA
- Trimethroprim - Triprim & TMP
- Cotrimoxasole - Apo-Sulfatrim, Trisul, Trimel, Bactrim & Septrin
Are acne antibiotics effective?
The effectiveness of topical acne antibiotics is limited because of their mechanisms. Any attempt to eliminate bacteria happens to be futile. Bacteria are present everywhere and do not directly cause acne. When sebaceous glands are overproducing sebum, hair follicles get clogged. The environment inside a clogged pore is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Dead skin cells also make the matter worse. That is why the effectiveness of topical acne antibiotics is limited. They do not address the actual causes of acne which is the over production of skin oil and the clogging of pores. Bacteria are present everywhere and they do not cause any problem until the sebum production does not exceed its optimum level.
Both oral and topical acne antibiotics are nearly similar in their effectiveness except that oral antibiotics have more side effects than topical. Everyone's digestive system has billions of friendly bacteria living inside which perform vital functions. Long term use of oral any antibiotic can cause serious health problems because they are not selective about which bacteria they should destroy i.e. they kill off the friendly ones as well as the invaders. This leaves the human gastrointestinal system susceptible to a wide range of illnesses and diseases. Excessive use of acne antibiotics is said to be one of main causes of Leaky Gut Syndrome, very serious health problem which can literally disturb all of the body's critical processes.
