Used for treating acne, Zineryt topical solution contains two active ingredients: the antibiotic erythromycin and the astringent zinc acetate. This prescription-only medication is available in several European countries. Erythromycin is a common acne treatment in the United States, although this combination product is not sold there. Zineryt is effective, although it may take several weeks to see results.

Acne typically begins with excess production of sebum, or skin oil, along with a type of bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes. Excess oil prevents dead skin cells from sloughing away, leading to clogged pores where the anaerobic P. acnes thrives. These bacteria feed on sebum then produce waste products and fatty acids that irritate the sebaceous glands, causing inflammation.

The antibiotic erythromycin can be used orally or topically to treat bacterial infections. Erythromycin does not directly kill bacteria, but it prevents bacteria from producing proteins they need to grow and replicate. The immune system is then more able to eliminate the infection. With the bacteria under control, inflammation subsides and the skin heals.

In the United States, doctors commonly prescribe oral erythromycin for treating moderate to severe cases of acne, in combination with a topical preparation containing the antibacterial agent benzoyl peroxide, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Products also are available containing topical erythromycin combined with benzoyl peroxide.

Zinc Acetate

People have traditionally used topical zinc solutions for skin healing. Zineryt contains zinc in the form of zinc acetate because zinc acetate enhances absorption of erythromycin into the skin. Zinc acetate also has tissue-shrinking properties and drying effects. This tightens pores and minimizes oiliness.

One study, published in the February 1990 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, investigated the effects of erythromycin and zinc acetate as a topical combination product. Some participants received the medical treatment for 12 weeks while others received a placebo, and then the placebo group was added to the treatment group for another 40 weeks. Significant improvement occurred in acne severity and numbers of acne lesions within 12 weeks in the medical treatment groups.

To use Zineryt solution, apply it twice daily to affected areas for 10 to 12 weeks. It may take several weeks before you see any improvement. You should use Zineryt for as short a time as possible to prevent antibiotic resistance from developing.

Side Effects

Side effects associated with Zineryt are rare. Some people experience skin irritation, burning sensations, dryness, peeling, itching and temporary redness. Fewer than 1 in 10,000 individuals experience a severe allergic reaction to Zineryt, as noted by NetDoctor.
