Wrinkles and Acne
Most people get acne in their teenage years, but men and women in their 20s, 30s and beyond can have an outbreak of pimples even as their skin is aging. Fortunately, there's a prescription medication known by the generic name tretinoin that can treat both wrinkles and acne at the same time, potentially leaving your skin breakout-free and wrinkle-free.
Adults who suffer from acne often find that it's particularly stubborn to treat, according to the Mayo Clinic. Hormones may play some role in the development of acne but probably aren't the root cause of its development; the majority of those who develop adult acne have normal hormone levels. Meanwhile, wrinkles develop as a result of the aging process, which can be accelerated by too much sun exposure.
If you have both wrinkles and acne, a prescription tretinoin topical product can combat both problems. Tretinoin, sold under the brand names Renova and Retin-A, among others, encourages the skin to form more collagen and renew itself more rapidly. This can result in acne clearing and improvements in the appearance of fine wrinkles and sun-damaged skin.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), tretinoin, which is derived from Vitamin A, works to fight acne by unclogging your pores and keeping them clog-free. Medical studies back its use in acne. In one study, reported in 2009 in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, researchers compared tretinoin treatment with another form of topical medication and found the tretinoin reduced pimples by nearly two-thirds within four weeks.
Medical studies also back tretinoin as an anti-aging prescription medication, according to the Mayo Clinic. In a study published in 2006 in the journal Cutis, 45 patients were divided into two groups; 22 applied a tretinoin product to their faces nightly, while the other 23 used a placebo. At the six-month mark, the group using the tretinoin had significant improvements in fine wrinkles and mottled-type skin discoloration.
Although dermatologists consider tretinoin to be a mainstay in the fight against acne, stubborn acne may require a combination of different treatments, such as tretinoin along with laser treatment or another physical procedure, according to the AAD. Likewise, tretinoin is effective against fine wrinkles, but severe wrinkling may also require a combination of treatments. Also, patients need to be aware that tretinoin can cause serious sun sensitivity and some skin irritation and peeling, especially when first starting treatment.
