White splotches on the skin may cause itching and discomfort. Although these splotches are alarming, in most cases the skin changes are not harmful. However, learning the cause and choosing the appropriate treatment is important. Vitiligo and fungal infections are common causes of white, itchy splotches on the skin.

Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes white pigment changes on the skin. Destruction of melanin causes this condition. The result is white splotches of skin. An immune system issue may cause this condition.
Fungal infections, such as tinea versicolor, also cause white, itchy splotches on the skin. This fungus is normally present on healthy skin. The problem occurs when the fungus becomes overgrown. Risk factors for fungus overgrowth include excessive sweating, oily skin and hot weather. Tanning bed use may also promote fungus growth. Immune system issues are also to blame in some people.

Vitiligo Treatments

Treatment for vitiligo includes topical corticosteroid therapy, which is available through your doctor. Topical ointments containing the active ingredient tacrolimus are effective for people with small pigment changes. Light therapies, available through your dermatologist, are effective for this condition.

Tinea Versicolor Treatments

Treat tinea versicolor with over-the-counter treatments that contain selenium sulfide, miconazole or clotrimazole. Skin that doesn't respond to nonprescription medications requires prescription topical treatments, such as selenium or ciclopirox, available through your doctor. Use oral medications, such as ketoconazole and itraconazole to treat skin that doesn't respond to topical creams.

Avoid triggers of Vitiligo, such as sun exposure and emotional stressProtect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays by using a sunscreen of 30 or higher. Sunscreen also minimizes tanning, which makes the white splotches less noticeable.
Prevent fungus infections by wearing materials that allow the skin to breathe easily, like cotton. Avoid sun exposure when possible, which promotes sweating and oil productions. Change sweaty clothing as quickly as possible.

Ask your doctor to examine white, itchy splotches on the skin. Although this condition isn't usually a cause for concern, she can rule out more serious causes, such as skin cancer. Higher strength medications are also available through your doctor.
