Which Foods Cause Colic in Children?

Which Foods Cause Colic in Children? Which Foods Cause Colic in Children?

Nearly all babies go through a period of increased and prolonged crying that can worry and frustrate parents, according to MedlinePlus. But when the crying lasts for more than three hours a day and isn't caused by a medical problem like an infection, the baby has colic. Colic has many causes. It can be caused by gas, an inability to tolerate proteins in certain formulas or foods in a mother's breast milk, hunger, over-feeding or emotional distress.

Stimulants

If you are breastfeeding your baby, try cutting stimulants like caffeine from your own diet, according to MedlinePlus. These may be triggering your baby's colic. Try cutting tea, coffee, chocolate, alcohol, soda and spicy foods.

Food Allergies

If you are a breastfeeding mother, you may also want to try cutting foods that could be creating an allergic reaction when they are passed to your baby through your breast milk, according to MedlinePlus. You may want to start by cutting cow's milk dairy products and nuts from your diet. Other possible culprits include citrus fruits, soy foods, eggs, wheat and fish. Try eliminating these foods one at a time for a week to see which ones make a difference, if any. If that doesn't work, you may want to talk to your doctor about other foods that might be causing problems. Some people say that breastfeeding mothers should also avoid gas-producing foods like cabbage or beans to reduce colic. But there is little evidence that this works, according to MedlinePlus.

Formula

If your baby is bottle-fed, most of the time switching formulas does not reduce colic, according to MedlinePlus. But for a handful of babies, it does help, so you might want to give it a try. Look for a formula that does not contain cow's milk, which can trigger an allergic reaction or lactose intolerance, both of which can lead to colic. Also look for a formula that is not iron-fortified. You might want to ask your doctor to suggest an appropriate formula.
