Overview

A scar is the skin's response to puncture or abrasion. It may leave unsightly discoloration, ridges or pitted areas on the skin. You can have some scars surgically removed and others may be minimized or prevented by the use of topical creams, including vitamin creams. In almost every case, medical research is still ongoing to determine efficacy of vitamin creams, so always consult with a health care provider before beginning any treatment.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is widely believed to minimize or prevent scarring. The evidence for this belief is mixed, and there are side effects of topical vitamin E use that are problematic for some people. Yale University dermatologists point out that massaging vitamin E cream or gel into scars may help to reduce them but that any benefit may be as much due to the frequent massage of the area. Some people develop an allergic reaction to topical vitamin E that can cause painful itching and redness that requires further treatment. Ask a health care provider about when or if you should apply vitamin E to scar tissue.

Burns

A number of vitamins are recommended to assist in the healing of burns and restoration of healthy skin. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that vitamin supplements A, C, E and the B-complex vitamins provide nutrients for burn healing but advises you to consult with a medical provider before taking or using any remedies. They do, however, say that vitamin E may be used topically on healed burns with new skin to promote healing. Vitamin E can increase the effects of several medications that cause blood-thinning, so if you are scheduled for surgery, you should check with your doctor about discontinuing any vitamin E use in advance of surgery.

Vitamin D

Psoriasis is an inherited, noninfectious skin condition that causes patches of raw, scaly skin that may be raised like scar tissue that continually peels and recurs. Psoriasis can leave scars, so preventive and healing therapies are the best ways to avoid rough red patches and scar removal treatments. Vitamin D creams and ointments are widely prescribed for superficial treatment of psoriasis. A Japanese trial published by the University of California Davis, suggests that highly concentrated forms of vitamin D cream may be more effective than lower concentrations in healing and minimizing psoriasis outbreaks.

Vitamin A

Retin-A, a topical cream derived from vitamin A that is commonly used for acne conditions, can work in two ways to diminish and prevent scarring. As a stand-alone acne treatment, Retin-A helps to heal outbreaks that lead to permanent scarring. As an adjunct to microdermabrasion, a process that removes the top layer of skin, Retin-A is recommended for people with mild acne scarring. Dermatologists at the University of California at San Francisco stress that microdermabrasion techniques require multiple treatments. Retin-A is available by prescription and may cause photosensitivity and other side effects, so check with your health care provider to see if it is suitable for you.
