Overview

Acne is a dermatological condition that can affect anyone, but it is most common in teenagers. This condition causes unsightly blemishes, including pimples, cysts, whiteheads, blackheads and zits. Acne occurs when oils from the skin come into contact with dead skin cells, which clogs the pores and leads to the blemishes.

Cause

Acne is caused by genetics. It can be aggravated by stress and hormonal changes, such as menstruation. The American Academy of Dermatology says that it isn't believed that any specific foods cause acne. It is possible, however, that certain foods may make your acne worse. For example, if you eat fried foods and oil comes into contact with your skin, it may make your acne worse and could possibly cause new blemishes to form.

Considerations

When you have acne-prone skin, it is important to keep your skin clean without over-cleansing. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology recommends washing your face twice daily with a mild antibacterial soap. However, if your face gets oily during the day or if you eat oily foods, rinse your face with lukewarm water to help remove the oil to reduce your risk of a breakout.

Treatment

Regardless of the cause of acne, the treatment remains the same. Over-the-counter products that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide are usually recommended for mild to moderate acne. More severe acne or acne that presents as cysts may need prescription medications like isotretinoin, retinoids, antibiotics or hormonal treatments. While you are treating your acne, you should use only non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic products on your skin as these aren't likely to clog pores and make acne worse. Treating acne isn't an overnight process. Instead, a course of acne treatment is likely to last at least four to eight weeks.

Warning

Treating your acne, including preventive measures such as rinsing oils off the skin after eating, as soon as you notice a blemish form is essential. Waiting for acne to clear up on its own can lead to discoloration of the skin called hyperpigmentation, or it may lead to permanent scarring. It is also possible that acne will lead to self- image problems, depression and anxiety.
