The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics reports that personal care products, especially those for the skin, contain hazardous impurities that may penetrate deep within the skin, causing irritation non-conducive to acne. By substituting commercial products for natural ingredients, you can circumvent side effects associated with chemicals, additives and preservatives. Although herbal alternatives are popular, there still lacks the necessary scientific data to illustrate their effectiveness on acne. It is best to consult your dermatologist before using an herbal skin care regimen.

Alcohol

Many over-the-counter facial masks employ alcohols such as ethanol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol and alcohol denat as a cleansing agent in their formulas. Unfortunately, alcohol causes irritation, pain, redness and swelling of the skin that can severely increase instances of acne and scarring, reports the Drug Information website. Alcohol causes a characteristic burning or stinging of the skin while cleansing the skin’s surface. In tandem with this cleaning, however, is the destruction of healthy skin cells as well as depleting keratin-filled skin layers that protect the skin from environmental damage.

For a natural weekly facial mask free of alcohol, combine an egg, lavender oil and unpasteurized honey in a bowl. Apply evenly to the face and let it dry for approximately 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Egg is a trapping agent that removes impurities from skin. Lavender oil retains antiseptic qualities that can moisturize the skin while also disinfecting. Honey effectively traps moisture and protects the skin from damage due to its high antioxidant properties, reports the Skin Care Resource Center.

Preservatives

According to the World Wide Health Organization, skin care products that contain harmful preservatives increase aging and make the skin more susceptible to free radical damage, which is detrimental to acne-prone skin. Commercial facial masks, as well as a plethora of associated beauty products, use preservatives to increase shelf life and prevent bacterial and fungal proliferation. The skin is the largest eliminatory organ in the body, easily absorbing preservatives and other chemicals. Avoid using facial masks composed of preservatives such as paraben, which are most widely used because they inhibit a large spectrum of microorganism growth. Avoid methylparaben, propylparaben, btylparaben and benzylparaben by using in-home facial treatments such as a thin facial layer of mashed tomatoes, which naturally absorbs acne-causing oil while regulating production.

Additives

Many commercial facial beauty masks use additives such as fragrance, dyes and detergent compounds to appeal to consumers without accounting for the detrimental effects they have on skin, especially those with acne, states the About Organics UK website. The University of Toronto’s Environmental Health and Safety Department reports that fragrance chemicals are known skin sensitizers, which can trigger irritation, leading to increased breakouts and inflammation. Additionally, dyes and detergents dry out the skin aggravating the dermis layers and appropriating blemishes.

For a beneficial weekly natural facial mask, mash blueberries with unflavored plain yogurt. Blueberries contain natural amounts of alpha hydroxyl acids helpful in eliminating impurities and debris without stripping essential layers. Yogurt contains lactic acid, which restores moisture while gently exfoliating the skin.
