What Kind of Food Gives You Acne?

The contribution of diet to the formation of acne remains controversial among scientists and medical professionals. Some studies have shown that diets high in certain types of food may increase the severity or frequency of acne breakouts. Beef and Dairy Products

Cattle used to produce beef or milk for dairy products are often treated with hormones called androgens. These steroid hormones are believed by some researchers to contribute to the formation of acne by increasing the production of oil by the sebaceous glands in the skin. However, epidemiological studies suggest the correlation between dairy products and diet is weak. Dermatologists are encouraged to discuss possible dietary changes and vitamin supplementation with patients when providing consultation for acne.

High Glycemic Load Foods

Foods that are considered to have a high glycemic load are those that lead to high and rapid increases in blood sugar. The increase in blood sugar levels leads to a surge of insulin release by the pancreas. The insulin surge may be followed by a period of low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia. Foods considered to be low on the glycemic index cause a less dramatic physiological response and are thought to contribute to a more stable rate of insulin secretion. Insulin production and secretion governs the production of sebum-producing androgens; thus, surges in insulin secretion may contribute to acne.

Myths and Studies

Folklore has placed dietary blame for acne on chocolate and junk food. Studies have shown that while too much of these in the diet can cause undesirable weight gain and other health problems, neither is associated with acne outbreaks. Small amounts of dark chocolate are even believed to be beneficial to your health, lifting mood and providing a source of antioxidants. Current studies continue to examine the effects of anti-inflammatory substances such as omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon as a potential way to promote healthy skin.
