What Is Pharmaton?
Feeling tired and run down is something that needs to be investigated by a doctor. Many illnesses can cause these symptoms. Pharmaton is an over-the-counter remedy that claims to help benign tiredness caused by stress. Pharmaton's main ingredient is a ginseng extract; the Chinese have used ginseng as medicine for 2,000 years. However, as with any herbal remedy, consult a physician before using Pharmaton.
Pharmaton is sold in the form of capsules. Marketed as a daily fatigue reducer, Pharmaton's manufacturer claims that the product is clinically proven to reduce fatigue. The active ingredient is G115, an extract of panax ginseng. With regular use, the capsules are purported to keep energy levels even throughout the day. Pharmaton is produced by Boehringer Ingelheim Limited, a pharmaceutical company in the United Kingdom.
Panax ginseng is also known as American ginseng, Chinese ginseng, Asian ginseng or Korean ginseng. The plant belongs to the araliaceae family, which includes about 700 species. Often found on mountain slopes, the root is the sought after part of the plant. Harvest is in the fall with older plants being the preferred crop.
The Pharmaton website defines daily fatigue as tiredness that is caused by stress. Stress is caused by a demanding lifestyle that includes making time for career, family, friends and social life. The symptoms of daily tiredness are fatigue upon waking, no energy and being unable to concentrate or keep up with your daily schedule.
A study published in "Phytotherapy Research" examined a group of 232 people between the ages of 25 and 60 years old. Pharmaton capsules were given to part of the group, and a placebo to another part of the group. The patients were asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding symptoms of tiredness, and the researchers calculated a score for each. The test was repeated on day 21 and day 42. The results showed that the Pharmaton group had fewer symptoms of fatigue than the placebo group, and that the difference was statistically significant. However, MayoClinic.com maintains that the fatigue studies are preliminary and that the research done so far has not been of high quality.
Panax Ginseng Uses
MayoClinic.com does not that well-run panax ginseng studies have shown promise in treating heart conditions. More research is needed, but it appears that there is an antioxidant effect that helps heart patients. Panax ginseng also shows promise in regulating blood sugar levels in diabetics. Some ginseng studies have shown improved immune system function in response to the flu vaccine.
