Identification

Acne can appear on different parts of your body such as your face, neck, shoulders, back and chest, according to the Mayo Clinic. Acne appears as small bumps on the surface of your skin which can appear red or swollen and contains pus. Blackheads are slightly different in that they do not form bumps and have a black appearance.

Over-the-Counter Medications

You can treat blackheads with over-the-counter medications such as salicylic acid, according to the Mayo Clinic. Salicylic acid is available in various strengths and effectively treats blackheads. Benzoyl peroxide is another effective treatment for acne, as it combats acne-causing bacteria. Sulfur effectively treats both acne and blackheads, as it is composed of two active ingredients, such as sulfur and benzoyl peroxide or sulfur and salicylic acid.

Prescription Medications

Your dermatologist can prescribe a prescription-strength topical solution, such as a lotion or gel, to treat blemishes. The Mayo Clinic and the American Academy of Dermatology state that you may need a combination therapy of different medications to combat acne. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, oral contraceptives have been approved to treat acne.

Warnings

You may experience side effects when using topical solutions such as skin irritation and possibly allergic reactions, whether it is over-the-counter products or prescription medications. If your dermatologist recommends birth control for your acne, you may have side effects such as increased blood pressure and irregular menstrual bleeding until your body adjusts to the medicine.

Prevention/Solution

For your acne medicine to be effective, it needs to be an ongoing therapy, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Cleanse your skin once in the morning and once in the evening to prevent oil from building up and clogging pores. Avoid greasy cosmetics and hair products, as they can contribute to excess oil. When washing your face, use a gentle motion, as scrubbing causes irritation to your skin. Do not aggravate your acne by picking, popping, squeezing or touching it.
