What Is a Blackhead Remover?

Overview

Blackheads can occur with any skin type, but are especially common in people with oily skin. Blackheads are formed when your pores clog with oil and dead skin cells. Once this accumulation peaks at the top of your pore, oxidation causes it to turn black. Blackheads can be difficult to remove, and they spread easily. However, blackhead removal tools have proven to be an effective way to get rid of these clogged pores without paying for an expensive facial.

Function

A blackhead remover is designed to unclog your pore and aid in the removal of debris. Blackhead removers do not prevent blackheads from forming, so it is important that you keep up with your daily beauty regimen.

Types

There are two types of blackhead removal tools that you can purchase on your own: double spoon and metal loop extractors. Double spoon extractors are the most user-friendly, according to carefair.com, as they are effective in removing blackheads without scarring your face. They have two sides shaped like spoons, which contour to your face upon application. Metal loop extractors, on the other hand, are equipped with steel loops that can damage your face if used incorrectly. These are designed for more stubborn blackheads.

Usage

Wash your face with warm water to help loosen your pores. You place a warm cloth on your face for up to ten minutes for maximum effect. Take the double spoon extractor and place the end directly over the pore. Press gently so that the blackhead expels through the hole in the spoon. If the pore is not responsive, use a metal loop extractor and gently scrape the surface of the blackhead.

Precautions

Do not use blackhead removers on a blackhead unless it is at the surface. Blackheads that are still forming will not have as pronounced of a head on them. Attempting to remove such a blackhead with these tools can worsen your pore, and even cause an infection. Make sure that the blackhead remover is clean before usage. Also, if you are using it for more than one blackhead, consider cleaning the removal tool with alcohol in between uses.

Price

Blackhead removers are available at major beauty stores and drug stores. All are an affordable alternative to a session at a spa. The more features that a particular blackhead remover offers, the more it costs. A standard double spoon extractor by Revlon costs around $5, and can be found at Walgreen's and Wal-Mart. A two-in-one blackhead remover with both a double spoon and a metal loop costs $18 at Sephora in 2010.
