Overview

The gallbladder holds a yellow tinged green liquid called bile that helps the body assimilate fat. Changes in bile constitution may skew the cholesterol content within the gallbladder and cause gallstones or blockages. Symptoms of gallbladder problems include sudden, sharp pain in the upper right portion of the body and nausea. Several research studies propose removing specific foods from your diet to alleviate symptoms, although you'll want to check with your doctor first before trying any of these suggestions.

HIgh Fat Animal Products

Avoiding all animal products with a high fat content such as whole milk, pork, eggs, red meat and chicken with the skin will assist with the reduction of gallbladder symptoms, according to GallbladderAttack.com. Additionally, an article in the September 2009 issue of "Alternative Medicine Review" states that vegetarian women had a 25 percent less chance of suffering from gallbladder issues than their meat-eating counterparts.

Sugar

The September 2009 article in "Alternative Medicine Review" also reports that several trials over the past 20 years have shown notable increases in gallstones among patients who ate large quantities of refined sugar. It notes a research study in which one group of participants ate a diet high in sugar with an average intake of 106 g a day, with another control group ingesting 6 g of sugar a day. The group with the higher sugar intake had significantly higher concentrations of cholesterol in their bile, which some experts, like Dr. Ronald Hoffman, believe increases the chance of gallstones and other gallbladder complications.

Saturated Fats

Approximately 45,000 middle-aged men participated in a 14-year study published in October 2004 in "Annals of Internal Medicine." The research found that eating the lowest amount of unsaturated fats and highest amount of saturated fats increased the risk of gallbladder disease by 18 percent when compared to the men who ate a lot of unsaturated fats and avoided the saturated kind when possible. Saturated fats come mainly from animal sources including meats and dairy, whereas unsaturated fats are found mainly in many fish, nuts, seeds and oils from plants.

Food Allergens

In the 1960s, a doctor by the name of J.C. Breneman started testing an elimination diet with his gallbladder disease patients, whereby milk products, onions, eggs, chicken and citrus fruits were banned for a short period of time. All of the participants' gallbladder symptoms disappeared within 5 to 7 days. Although as of 2011, researchers haven't recreated the now-legendary study, which was published in 1968 in "Annals of Allergy," specialists such as Dr. Ronald Hoffman still ask their patients to undergo allergy testing and adapt their diets accordingly before considering surgical treatment.
