Acne is a skin condition that causes pimples, which occur when hair follicles beneath your skin become clogged. Generally, the regions most affected are the face, neck, back, chest and shoulders, according to MedlinePlus. Although acne is not a serious health concern, it can cause severe emotional distress and embarrassment. There is little evidence linking foods to the emergence of pimples, but some items may worsen existing breakouts.

Fatty Foods

Foods high in saturated fats are not only detrimental to your arteries but also to your skin. To properly fight pimple-causing bacteria, your immune system must be optimal. This requires eating a balanced diet that is low in fat. Leslie Baumann says in her book "Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice," that eating foods high in saturated facts significantly increased acne flare-ups. These fats encourage sebum production in the skin thereby increasing the likelihood of further clogging and the duration of a breakout, Michael Zimmermann says in his book "Pocket Guide to Micronutrients in health and Disease." Fatty foods include whole-fat milk, cheese, butter and fatty meats.

Refined Sugars

Foods containing refined sugars, like those made with white flour, such as commercially baked goods, soda and candy, can actually depress the immune system making it more difficult for the body to fight acne-causing microorganisms on the skin, Zimmermann says. You should always eat sugar sparingly and avoid sugar-laden drinks that can disrupt the fragile balance of your immune system. Unlike simple sugar, complex carbohydrates, which break down into sugars, slowly release into the bloodstream and promote your immune system. Avoiding refined sugars is especially helpful in teenagers who are already experiencing fluctuations in hormones.

Salty Foods

Eating a high-sodium diet can cause dehydration and worsening of acne. Iodine-enriched salts may also be dually detrimental to acne-prone skin as this compound may cause rapid flare-ups upon consumption, according to Nicholas Perricone in his book "The Acne Prescription." Although iodine is a needed nutrient for normal bodily function, those sensitive to the mineral should limit their intake to only daily recommended amounts. Avoid salty foods like potato chips, French fries, popcorn, instant noodles and canned soups.
