Acne is a skin condition that causes inflamed red lesions, blackheads and pustules, more commonly called zits, to form. Acne typically appears on the face and shoulders but can also be found on the trunk, arms, legs and even buttocks. Acne can affect individuals of any age, including infants. Acne can be troublesome and embarrassing. Diet can play a significant role in the development and prevention of acne because some foods can make this skin condition worse.

Fat

The type of fat you consume is a key factor in your acne control. Saturated and partially hydrogenated fats can cause damage to the body tissues and inflammation, resulting in pustule and cyst formation. Saturated fats are solid at room temperature and are primarily found in animal products. These include whole milk, cheese and red meat. Partially hydrogenated fats come from fried food, chips, cookies, crackers and other prepackaged foods. Both of these fats should be avoided and replaced with omega-3 fatty acids from flax seeds and cold-water fish as well as omega-6 fats from vegetable oils.

Carbohydrates

Eating a variety of foods, including adequate amounts of protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates will help fight acne. The consumption of simple or refined sugars can lead to acne. When you consume foods high in refined sugars such as white bread, white flour, baked goods and processed foods, your blood sugar will rise, setting off a series of hormonal changes known to cause acne. These foods can also lead to excessive weight gain.

Hot and Spicy Foods

You should limit foods that raise your body's temperature. Garlic, coffee, peppers, salsa, chili, hot sauces and other spicy foods should be avoided. Spicy foods may help flush your system, but some people have difficulty digesting such foods. Eating hot and spicy foods may cause a reaction within your body, leading to inflammation of the skin.

Iodine

Iodine is found in many foods, including liver, milk, cheese, salt, kelp, commercial bread, clams, crabs, seafood and processed foods. It is associated with acne, and you should avoid it to prevent acne breakouts. When you consume too much iodine, the excess is excreted through the body's oil glands. As it is excreted, iodine irritates the pores of the skin, causing inflammation, red splotches and bumps. This is especially true if you are prone to acne and skin problems.
