The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 2005 Food Pyramid guidelines recommend that adults eat seven to eight servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans do not eat the recommended daily allowances of foods that provide the most fiber in the diet. These fiber-rich foods can help alleviate loose stools.

Caffeine and Drinks

According to Health Castle, an online resource run by registered dietitians, caffeine found in foods and drink can cause you to have loose stools or diarrhea. If you have lactose intolerance, then milk and other dairy products can also cause excess intestinal gas and loose stools. Fluids high in fiber, such as prune juice and apple juice, can cause unexpected loose stools.

Fatty or Spicy Foods

According to Health Castle, it is important to recognize your reaction to fatty foods or those which are spicy. Both categories of foods can cause loose stools. Test this by limiting your intake of fried foods, high fat desserts, excess amounts of butter, higher fat milk products and greasy snack foods. Once the loose stool has resolved, introduce some of these foods back into your diet. If the loose stool continues, stop eating these foods.

Contaminated Foods

Most foods can also become contaminated by bacteria, viruses or toxins that naturally occur in the foods. The most common types are salmonella, staphylococcus aureus, E. coli and shigella. According to Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, food poisoning can also cause loose stools or diarrhea.
