Overview

In a healthy adult, food does not cause itching. Itchy skin after eating certain foods is caused by an allergic reaction. You may develop itchy skin after eating certain foods if you have a food allergy, are allergic to pollen or develop a rash after touching some foods. If you notice that certain foods cause your skin to itch or become swollen, talk with your doctor. Itchy skin, along with facial swelling, may be a sign of a severe allergic reaction.

Food Allergy

A food allergy is a common cause for itching skin. After eating a food that you're allergic to, you can develop general skin irritation, hives or eczema. Hives are especially alarming because it is a common sign of anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction. Common food allergies that cause your skin to itch include fish, tree nuts, peanuts, milk, eggs, soy and wheat. With a food allergy, you may develop other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, wheezing, facial swelling, diarrhea, nausea and sinus complications.

Oral Allergy Syndrome

Oral allergy syndrome is a condition that's related to a pollen allergy. This syndrome causes itching in or around the mouth. Itching and inflammation may develop in the mouth, lips, throat or face and rarely causes any serious reactions. This syndrome occurs because the immune system confuses the proteins in certain foods as a type of pollen. For example, if you're allergic to alder pollen your mouth may become itchy after you eat raw parsley, celery, pears, almonds, apples, cherries, peaches or hazelnuts. Oral allergy syndrome is treated with oral antihistamines, cooking the food before you eat it or immunotherapy.

Allergic Contact Dermatitis

Some foods can cause your skin to become itchy just from touching them. Tomatoes, citrus fruits and peanut butter are common foods that can irritate the skin. Allergic contact dermatitis causes inflammation along with the itchiness and is a localized rash only in the area where the substance has touched the skin. Allergic contact dermatitis is treated by avoiding direct skin exposure to the food. If you accidentally touch a food that triggers this condition, wash the area that was in direct contact with soap and water and apply hydrocortisone cream.

Consideration

If your skin is itchy, do not scratch it. Many allergic skin conditions worsen when you scratch them. If you break the skin because you've scratched it, you are at risk of developing a secondary skin infection, such as impetigo.
