The buildup of gas in the intestinal tract and accompanying pain that is called bloating, is something that everyone experiences at some point. Bloating can be caused by medical conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome or an infection within the digestive tract. Stress and severe emotional upset may also cause bloating. Sometimes bloating is related to the foods you eat, especially if you suffers from food intolerances. Restricting the diet may help reduce food-related bloating.

Dairy Products

Dairy products such as milk, ice cream, cheese and yogurt may sometimes cause bloating in people who have an intolerance to lactose. Lactose is a sugar found in milk and milk products. People who are lactose intolerant do not have enough lactase in their bodies; an enzyme that helps them digest lactose. Bloating can be one of the symptoms of lactose intolerance. Eliminate bloating caused by lactose by avoiding the offending products or by taking a lactase supplement before eating dairy.

Bread and Grains

Bloating can be a symptom that is caused by bread, grains and any other food that contains gluten when a person suffers from celiac disease (CD). Similar to lactose intolerance, celiac disease is a condition in which digestion and absorption of nutrients is disrupted when eating certain kinds of food. Gluten is a form of protein that is found in grains such as wheat, rye, oats (called prohibited grains in the language of CD). Following a gluten-free diet can reduce the bloating associated with celiac disease.

Fiber-Rich Foods

Foods that are high in fiber may produce gas and bloating in some people, particularly those who have quickly increased their fiber intake. Fiber allows the digestive system to run smoothly, but adding too much fiber too fast can produce a variety of gastrointestinal complaints, including bloating. Beans, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and brussels sprouts are some examples of fibrous foods that can produce a full, bloating sensation. Slowly increasing the amount of dietary fiber, so the body can become accustomed to it in increments, can help relieve bloating in this case.

Fatty Foods

Baked goods, fried foods, greasy pizza and other fat-laden snack foods can cause bloating in some people. Fat can irritate the lining of the stomach and slow down digestion. Bloating, cramping and heartburn can be the result. Limiting fried foods and choose lower-fat options for crackers, chips and other snacks may help alleviate unpleasant symptoms.

Carbonated Drinks

Carbonated drinks such as sodas and beer can cause bloating due to the extra amount of air that is consumed. Drinking any beverage through a straw may also produce bloating if you swallow additional air.
