What Foods Cause Allergies? What Foods Cause Allergies?

About one-third of American's believe they have a food allergy and take action by modifying their diet to accommodate the suspected allergic reaction, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. A food allergy is a hypersensitivity to certain proteins found in specific foods. The immune system overreacts and attacks the proteins, mistaking them as harmful intruders. This reaction can lead to swollen lips, difficulty breathing and hives. Different foods affect each individual differently. If you suspect you have a food allergy, talk with a doctor and request allergy testing.

Dairy

Cow's milk is a common food that causes an allergic reaction in some people. A dairy allergy is different than lactose intolerance. If you're lactose intolerant, your body doesn't produce enough lactase, an enzyme, to break down the sugar in the dairy. A dairy allergy is a reaction of the immune system that will cause symptoms to appear within minutes of ingesting dairy products, according to KidsHealth.

Some of the most common symptoms of a diary allergy are hives, stomach issues and upper-respiratory complications. Hives are small, red bumps that are very itchy and can appear anywhere on the body. Someone with a dairy allergy may experience stomach cramping and pain. A runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing and asthma are typical upper-respiratory reactions from a milk allergy.

Tree Nuts

A tree nut allergy is considered one of the most common food allergies in adults and kids, according to the Food Allergy Initiative. Tree nuts are found in many unsuspected products, such as honey, cereals and chocolates. The U.S. Government requires all packaged foods containing tree nuts or produced in a facility that shares equipment with nuts to disclose this information on the package.

A tree nut allergy can lead to anaphylactic shock, a rare life-threatening allergic reaction. If you have a tree nut allergy, read product labels and carry an epi-pen on your person at all times. Wear a medical bracelet identifying your allergy condition.

Shellfish

Shellfish is a common food, causing allergic reactions. The most common shellfish that people are allergic to are shrimp, clams, lobster, squid and octopus, according to MayoClinic.com. A shell fish allergy can range from mild reactions to severe, life-threatening reactions. Mild reactions include a runny nose and mild nasal congestion, while severe reactions can cause restriction in the airways, swelling of the tongue, throat or lips and a faint pulse.
