Skin is the largest organ in the body and helps to protect the body from bacteria, along with regulating the temperature of the body. Many skin conditions such as acne and eczema can make the skin dry, rough and brittle. Fortunately, there are vitamins that can help to keep skin healthy.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is involved in the regular growth and maintenance of skin. According to Kids Health, it assists in the development of skin cells and tissues, and ensures the skin is overall healthy. Vitamin A is responsible for the production of sebum, a body created oil that helps to keep the skin smooth and fresh. Good sources of this vitamin include carrots and dark leafy vegetables.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin and as a result, its contents are not stored in the body as it exists through the urinary system. Vitamin C is required for the body to help make and repair skin tissues and also contributing the production of an important protein called collagen, which helps to make scar tissue, ligaments, blood vessels and skin. Vitamin C helps to protect our skin from sun damage. Vitamin C is also important for keeping bones and teeth healthy. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, low amounts of Vitamin C in the body can lead to dry and scaly skin. Vitamin C is found in oranges and citrus fruits.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant vitamin and helps fight off damage causing substances called free radicals, which can enhance the aging process, resulting in excessive wrinkles and fine lines. Vitamin E promotes healthy blood circulation in skin cells, promoting skin tissue growth. Vitamin E helps to improve the skins texture by keeping it hydrated and strong. Vitamin E can be found in corn and sunflower seeds.
