Overview

Acne are persistent lesions that form due to numerous factors, such as excess oil production, bacteria build-up, clogged pores and inflammation. To help prevent acne, you should consider supplementing your diet with a variety of nutritious foods that are rich in a selection of nutrients that are effective in reducing and combating acne.

Acne Causes

Factors that contribute to the development of acne include the irregular shedding of dead cells on your skin and overproduction of sebum. According to the Mayo Clinic, acne forms when hair follicles in your skin become clogged with bacteria and other viruses, leading to inflammation. Then, sebum causes your follicles to bulge, resulting in a whitehead. Other factors that may play a role in acne formation include medication reactions or a hormonal imbalance. Foods such as chocolate or fast-food do not cause acne, despite popular beliefs.

Acne Prevention

There are simple and efficient natural ways to prevent acne. This includes washing your face with warm water two times daily. Ensure that you use hot water as it opens up your pores and kills bacteria. Also, try to avoid touching your face and shower after any exercising or tedious work as your swear can trap bacteria, according to the Mayo Clinic. Lastly, don't pick or squeeze acne, as you may aggravate the lesions, possibly causing scarring.

Foods High in Vitamin A

Foods that contain a significant amount of vitamin A include liver, fish oil, pumpkin, spinach, dark green leafy vegetables, cantaloupe, cream and halibut. According to the Vitamin & Nutrition Center, vitamin A helps to prevent acne by reducing excess production of natural oils, like sebum. Its important to have an adequate supply of vitamin A in your diet, as low intake of vitamin A can cause acne.

Foods High in Zinc

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, zinc can be found in foods such as whole grains, shellfish, sunflower seeds, green beans, soybeans, cheese, mushrooms, tofu and red meats. The Vitamin & Nutrition Center explains that zinc is important for healing acne scarring, while also controlling your oil glands, aiding in the prevention of acne.
