Collagen, a protein, makes up the connective tissues of the human body. In humans, collagen provides structure for blood vessels, bones, tendons and skin. As the aging process occurs, collagen production slows and breakdown of existing collagen begins. This leads to some of the outward signs of aging, including wrinkles and sagging skin. Rebuilding collagen in the skin may improve some of these signs of aging.

Vitamin C

The body needs vitamin C to produce collagen properly, making the consumption of vitamin C an important way to build new collagen. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, adds hydrogen and oxygen to the amino acids in collagen cells. This allows the amino acids to carry out the necessary collagen-producing functions. Sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, broccoli, strawberries, bell peppers, cauliflower and cantaloupe.

Laser Therapy

During a laser therapy session, a doctor applies an intense beam of light to the treatment area. University of Michigan Dermatology explains that this stimulates the production of new collagen by the body. The growth of new collagen leads to the improvement of fine lines, better skin tone and reduced acne scarring. Laser therapy procedures do not require a long recovery period, but several sessions are required for best results.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion encourages collagen remodeling, also known as the production of new collagen. During this procedure, a medical professional applies fine particles to the face and vacuums them away. This removes dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin. After the procedure, the professional dries the skin and applies a moisturizer. AgingSkinNet, a website published by the American Academy of Dermatology, explains that microdermabrasion does not penetrate the deep layers of the skin. This means the results are usually modest. Side effects of microdermabrasion include stinging, sunlight sensitivity, burning and pain.

Copper Peptides

When the amount of copper inside cells increases, collagen production also increases. The best way to promote new collagen production with copper is to use skin creams containing copper peptides. When copper binds with peptides, or small protein fragments, the peptides neutralize the copper to prevent skin damage. Because copper toxicity causes serious complications, discuss the proper dosage of a copper supplement with your doctor.

Amino Acids

The body needs amino acids, the building blocks of protein, to produce collagen in the cells. In a study led by Bo Han, assistant professor of research at University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, investigators administered amino acids, antioxidants, alpha-lipoic acid and proanthocyanidin to female rats. Investigators found that the mixture of amino acids enhanced the production of collagen. This study appeared in a 2005 issue of Connective Tissue Research. Scientists need to further research the effects of amino acids on collagen production in humans.
