Ways to Help Get Rid of Acne

Overview

Acne is a skin malady that most commonly affects adolescents going through hormonal changes in the body. However, it can affect anyone at any point in their life. It is influenced by several different factors, including personal hygiene, skin exposure to products, and genetics. When acne strikes, it can cause discomfort in a location, including irritation, inflammation and sensitive skin. White heads can also develop and cause embarrassment and low self-esteem in individuals with acne. However, you can improve your skin's appearance by eliminating acne.

Step 1

Wash your skin daily with a gentle cleanser and a soft, clean washcloth. Gentle cleansers should contain only mild detergents that will not irritate sensitive skin--doing so can exacerbate inflammation and irritation on the skin and worsen your acne. When oil and dead skin cells are causing your acne to flare up, cleansing once or twice each day--try once before bedtime and once every morning--can make a big difference. For best results, apply the cloth gently to your skin.

Step 2

Apply mild acne medications to the skin or other skin treatments that are used to relieve acne. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are both common medications found in over-the-counter skin creams and ointments. According to Mayo Clinic, they can help treat problems exacerbating your acne, including oil, contaminants and skin cells that are repressing oil against the skin. These should be taken as directed on the medication's packaging for best results.

Step 3

Keep irritants off the face. According to Discovery Health, your hands can bring dirt, bacteria and other problematic particulates to your skin. In addition to keeping your hands off your face, you should also be careful of the clothing and other products that come in contact with your skin. For some people, oil-based skin products can clog pores and worsen acne. Hats, headbands and other headwear can force oil into the pores and cause outbreaks, and some people experience worse acne after prolonged exposure to the sun, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Step 4

Exercise several times each week. According to Discovery Health, sweating can help clean out your pores and keep your skin healthy. Consistent exercise can also help relieve your stress, which can contribute to or cause acne.
